Pine Gap

Located in the Australian outback near the town of Alice Springs, Pine Gap is a CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) and NRO (National Reconnaissance Office) facility designed to intercept telephone, radio, data links, and other communications from around the world.

Construction at Pine Gap commenced in 1967 and the facility became operational in 1970. Pine Gap is currently involved in the Echelon global surveillance system, and is also associated with U.S. missile programs.

Like many secret bases, Pine Gap is a "hotspot" for UFO sightings and is the object of immense speculation. Some people theorize that the facility extends several miles underground, and there are reports of Alice Springs air traffic controllers tracking hypersonic aircraft near the facility. When in 2001, an unmanned "Global Hawk" plane completed an autonomous flight from California to an "undisclosed" location in Australia, Pine Gap was suspected as the probable destination.
